What Difference do Rankings Make to Site Traffic and Leads?

The position you are on the Search Engine Results Page (the page you see when you click search having entered a query into the search box) has a significant impact on the the number of visitors your site will receive. This is because the Click Through Rate varies hugely with SERP position. Here is how this affects your rankings:

  • According to extensive research by Backlinko, the average Click-Through Rate (CTR) for position one on the SERP is 27.6%, position three is 11%, and position ten is just 2.4%. 
  • Example: If there are 100 monthly searches for a given search term where you rank 10th, you receive only 2.4 clicks per month, while the business in position one gets 27.6 clicks per month. This means the business in position one receives more than eleven times the visitors. 
  • If every 20 visitors to the site results in one lead, the business in position one is generating 17 leads per year from this single, low-volume search term. Extrapolate this across a basket of 10–15 search terms, and you can see how those who succeed in search can generate significantly more leads than those who don’t prioritize it.
